Tall Girl

2019

New Orleans

Nzingha Stewart

Adolescent Romantic Dramedy

What’s it all about: Tall girl Ava Michelle shows up at homecoming just long enough to make it all about how she’s tall, then chooses the wrong boy and goes home. Best friend Anjelika Washington wonders aloud if any of her self-absorbed friends will ever ask what’s going on in her life, but not even the movie cares enough to find out.

First Encounter: first viewing (a macaroni pick)

Prostitute Index: nil

Death By: self pity

Relics: Jan-Brady voices in your head (in Tall Girl 2, which we watched right after)

Hoops: the tall blonde foreign-exchange student who is Swedish; parents who just don’t understand

Heartthrobs: Luke Eisner, Paris Berelc, Clara Wilsey

Pass/Fails the Test of Time: Steve Zahn

LoFi Magic: prank phone call, knife-throwing teen beauty queen

Makes me want to: watch Tall Girl 2, which we did later the same day

Candotti Take: “Tell me about yourself: well, I am white, blonde and rich.”

Worth a watch/rewatch: Yes
